HOME INVASION

Kokomo Perspective

On Monday, at approximately 12:28 a.m., Officers of the Kokomo Police Department responded to a residence in the 2400 block of N. Lafountain Street concerning the report of a home invasion robbery.
Two adult male residents reported that two white males, one wearing a black bandana across his face and the other wearing a yellow bandana, entered the home and were both armed with handguns. The gunmen ordered both men to the floor.
The gunmen fled the home with an undetermined amount of cash and a cell phone. The suspects left the area possibly in a silver or gray Dodge Durango. No one was injured during this incident.

Home Security Tips

Research shows that people who are willing to take some simple action rarely have trouble with their home being robbed or burglarized. Remember that the typical individual willing to break into your home is almost always a “Predator”. The Predator is the most likely to “scope out” his victims and the least likely to get involved if he feels there’s a chance he will be caught, injured or killed. This is why the following “Personal Security” steps work so well – the Predator is simply wary of anything that will put him in jeopardy.
  • Burglar Alarm. Have simple alarm system with a motion detector alarm and motion detector lights around your home. The price of a system can be amazingly cheap.
  • A Dog. A BIG dog if possible. Research proves that this is one of the best deterrents – even better than a burglar alarm – because of the noise and potential danger of being bitten. But a small “yapper” is effective too as it alerts everyone in the house that there is an intruder. Some apartment dwellers in big cities even found that using a recorded dog bark hooked to a motion detector was highly effective in keeping burglars away.
  • Look Occupied. When you leave home, keep a radio tuned to a 24-hour talk station and keep a couple lights turned on inside the house. A predator will rarely want to break into a home he feels is occupied with awake and alert people.
  • Sound Occupied. Your answering machine should never inform a caller that you are out but instead that you “can’t take the call right now”. Don’t give out a bunch of information that you wouldn’t want in the hands of a predator (“Hi... this is Tammy. I’m alone for the weekend counting a lot of cash, so I can’t get to the phone right now...”). Okay, you get the idea. Better to simply say something like “You’ve reached (phone number), please leave a message.” Avoid names and details.
  • No Place To Hide. Keep the shrubs next to your house trimmed in a way that makes it difficult for someone to hide.
  • Got Light? Keep flash lights in several places throughout your home. Have one that illuminates well and at least one that doesn’t require batteries (you shake or crank them).
  • Peep Hole: Use a door peep hole or a video security camera to see who’s at your front door without having to open the door or being seen or heard. Depending on door chains for your security is a mistake as they are easily broken by a motivated intruder.
  • Trust your instincts; do not allow anyone into your home if you are the least bit suspicious.
  • Hidden Keys: Bad idea to hide house keys outside your home as Predators can be cunning creatures. They may see you hiding or retrieving the key, or may simply “figure out” your hiding spot (which is why you should forget about the “under the matt” spot). Give a spare key to a trusted neighbor.
  • Lock Up. It’s common for people to lock their home when they leave... but not when they stay. Always keep doors locked -- even when you or your family members are home.
  • Good Locks. Install good locks in all your entrances (deadbolts are best) and secure all windows with locks as rarely will an intruder break a window for entry. Too much noise and potential for injury.
  • Cell Phone: Don’t depend on a “land line” phone as the wires can be cut. Always have a charged cell phone within easy reach next to your bed.
  • Power Protection: It’s a good idea to lock your breaker box as clever robbers and rapists like to simply pop off the main breaker before breaking into your home.
  • Light Up The House. Have an electrician install a master switch in your bedroom so that you can turn on all the main lights in your house without having to turn on your bedroom light. This allows you a place to hide... but not the Predator.
  • Click-Clack. There’s nothing that scares a Predator more than the sound of a shotgun being locked and loaded. A simple loaded shotgun under the bed at night, is a great deterrent, it should be kept in a secure place during the day, out of reach of children (even if you don’t have children). Shotguns are easy to master -- do yourself a favor and take a class.
  • Practice. Rehearse drills for yourself and your family members for fire, home invasion, and other emergencies.

Myths of Fighting..Change your Mindset!

Never Hit First – Another notion from childhood – because what’s the first thing that your dad or a teacher asked you after a fight? Wasn’t it “who hit who first?”
Well research proves that hitting first means you’ve got a darn good chance to win the fight. You’ve initiated surprise, dismay, got the guy back on his heels, and have an excellent opportunity to keep up the pressure until you can end the threat. Everything you want.
Oh... but wait... that’s right... you can’t hit first. Teacher said so.
It’s time to grow up and get away from this kind of thinking – it’s just plain dangerous.

Let’s forget fist-fighting for a second and think about it as a gun fight. Would you allow an armed opponent the first shot? I sure hope not. Same goes with hand-to-hand combat. Do NOT freely give away your main advantage because of some misguided idea.

Fair Fight – This is more common than you’d imagine. Stuff like don’t hit a guy with glasses... no hair pulling... no biting... no eye gouging... and so on. If you actually believe this, you need to add one more to the list... no fighting.
It’s like the British officers who were so disgusted with the way “unchivalrous” American colonials fought. Those savages actually “unfairly” shot at them from behind trees and bushes. How uncouth.
Let me be clear... in a fight you want an unfair advantage. You never want to purposely give away anything that may give your adversary the edge.
In one of the videotaped street fights I researched, there was a young man who had his face nearly bit off in a vicious attack. He kept screaming out “no fair... he’s biting... he’s biting...”
I still get shivers thinking about that poor kid.
I only hope you will not be as naïve. You must assume that your adversary will do anything – and that he plays by NO rules. I know it’s an ugly thought, but you must treat every fight like it’s a life or death battle. The idea that you can somehow remain a “gentleman” puts you in an extremely vulnerable position.

Final Option Tactics

Some have asked me what is this Final Option Tactics program all about? Back in 2000 while I was still an active competitor I started to notice there was a real need for a program that cut straight to the chase when it comes to relistic self defense for adults and professionals.
Talking with adults and the reason's they did not want to join a traditional martial arts program was varied some didn't want to wear 'pajamas', others simply didn't have the time to consistantly train to earn a rank or they didn't care about rank. I even had some adults tell me they thought martial arts was kiddie sport.
I realized that there was a real need for a serious tactical defense program but there were several key items that it had to address. First the course had to be realistic and not be based on 'sport' self defense is not about playing by any rules. Secondly it needed to be based on gross motor movement skills as fine motor movement skills go out the window once a serious threat is presented. Third it had to cover all ranges of combat, kicking, punching, clinching, ground and weapons since 80% of all assaults involve a weapon. It also had to be effective regardless of size(key point). It also had to be easy to learn in a matter of hours, not years!
In all we have put together such a course and it has always been met with great results and praise from our clients from the domestic engineer to law enforcement officials. This course is always evolving and changing it was never met to become a stagnant program. When we learn a better method that makes sense and meets our criteria then we roll it into the program. We keep what is useful and discard the rest. This is not an 'art' it is a realistic defensive tactics program designed to teach you to simply cheat at the beginning, middle and end of an assualt.
Final Option Tactics Hand gun Levels I, II and III are led by a former ISP SWAT member and detective. While level I is designed to give a novice the basic of sound shooting skills. Level II & III are designed to teach FOF (force on force) skills and understanding the dangers of a knife attack. Don't believe the old saying 'Don't bring a knife to a gun fight' otherwise you may very well be carried to your grave. It's better known as the Tueller Rule when it comes to a knife attack. To my knowledge we are the only place doing this type of instruction at this time.

Exercise Choice and You

As most of you know I seldom get on Face Book. While I do think Face Book is an awesome tool for finding old friends and is a great social media for business. I have to say I find it sad how some use it in a negative manner. I've watched and read some postings that I sit back and think why would anyone write such a thing for others to read?

When it comes to exercise programs it is our belief that when a person finds a program or a business that helps them better their lives then that is the program best suited for them. It's a well known fact in the fitness industry come January 1 many health clubs will flourish with new members bent on 'getting back into shape'. The reality of this and the statistical facts show by March 78% of those new members have fallen off track and no longer working out on a regular basis. I have also read where studies were performed and it was discovered that those who join a gym or martial arts studio before or sometime after the first of the year tend to be more committed to their workout regimen over a longer period of time.

So when we are asked who or what is the best place to exercise I tell them this. First what is your goal? Then find a facility that offers what you truly enjoy when it comes to working out. Some love spinning classes, some have a goal of becoming stronger, while others want a lean body, others might want functional strength along with endurance (think MMA fighters). But whatever you choose make sure it's something you truly enjoy or you will soon find yourself amoung the 78% who end up not using their membership to the fullest.

We at Indiana PIT do understand that our programs may not fit everyone's needs and the most important thing to ask yourself before joining any health club/martial arts studio is do YOU truly enjoy the workouts and the atmosphere of that business. If the answer is 'yes' then you've probably found the place you need to be at that time. Indiana Pit strives to create a family atmosphere and our dedication to continuous improvment of our programs with the goal of keeping YOU the customer coming back smiling for more.

For those of you who are considering finding a gym or martial arts studio to join. Ask if they offer a FREE trial or visitors pass to allow you the chance to see what they have to offer and to get a feel of the atmosphere of the business. Ask yourself if you can see you still working out at this business 12 months from now, if the answer is yes, then you've probably found your new home.

We wish you the best!
